It's gotten to the point in winter where you either go crazy from being cooped up indoors or you go out and embrace the weather. You might be headed to the slopes, strapping on some snowshoes, ice skating or just shoveling the driveway, but it's a good idea to keep some of these safety tips in mind to stay in good health.
- Avoid going out by yourself, but if you do, let someone know where you are headed and when you expect to return.
- Dress for the elements. Warm boots, gloves and a hat are essential. Dress in layers, and the first layer should be a non-cotton moisture-wicking fabric. Consider whether a helmet and eye protection are important for the activity you plan on doing.
- If you’re around bodies of water, make sure they are sufficiently frozen before walking on them.
- Use extreme caution around vehicles. A patch of ice can cause a car to lose control so make sure you are on alert.
- Check the weather report when going out so you're not caught off guard.
- Never drink alcohol while out in the cold. It can give you a false sense of warmth when your body is really too cold, resulting in frostbite or hypothermia.
- Always carry a cell phone so you can contact emergency services if necessary.
While the winter weather brings cold temperatures, there are many ways to go out and enjoy the winter season. As you head out to participate in your favorite cold-air activity, take these steps to keep yourself safe and healthy.
